Vladimir Jon Cubrt as Danny (left) and Donna Christo as Adele (right) star in The Weeping Salsa on stage at The Theatre Centre until November 29.

The playgoer is lured with an artful blend of stately pacing, the erotic tension and brooding silences which make for a convincing, complicated and sensual story. Written by Vladimir Jon Cubrt, this small but solid play is immense with craft if not resonance.

With themes like passion, obsession, mad love, and domestic drama there’s a bleak honesty that is balanced out through dance and moments of raw truths. Donna Christo (Adele) and Vladimir Jon Cubrt (Danny) provide rich and adept performances both in their acting and with their dancing.

The story revolves around a tempestuous relationship, characterized by some manipulation, dominance and submission. With a compendium of moody, provocative and intellectual ambitions, Danny sets out to sooth his ailing heart through irrational behaviours involving his ex lover Adele.

Switching from present to past and dancing in between, the characters are explained to reflect the journey that has made them who they are. What’s discovered is that their partnership shaped their lives whether good or bad and that their paths crossed for a purpose.

Whether you’re a salsaholic or just an enthusiast for good theatre, The Weeping Salsa promises tearful moves and emotional stirring.
